Kontaveit had been active this year but failed to make it out of the opening two rounds of any tournament she’s entered, getting knocked out in round two of the Australian Open and the first round of the French Open.

She then lost to fellow first time finalist . Good results followed as she qualified for Stuttgart and reached the quarterfinals there. As a qualifier, she also entered into Madrid and Rome, reaching the quarterfinals in the latter which was her first Premier 5-quarterfinal. She lost to Simona Halep but beat world No. 1, Angelique Kerber, en route. She followed that with a second-round appearance at the , beating before losing to Garbiñe Muguruza.

Kontaveit had a hugely successful career, winning six titles and reaching as high as World No. 2 in the WTA Ranking, making her the highest-ranked Estonian player in tennis history.

Kontaveit’s friendship with Jabeur goes back a long way. The Tunisian was there when Kontaveit played her final match in the Tallinn exhibition and even though Jabeur won the match, she was emotional about her friend bidding adieu to the sport. It wasn’t a surprise that she was the first one to congratulate Kontaveit on the birth of her son.

In October 2021, Kontaveit won the inaugural Transylvania Open in Romania, – the women’s championship tennis tournament run by the Women’s Tennis Association – becoming the first player representing Estonia to make the year-ending championships. In the same month, she also became the first Estonian tennis player to make the global top 10 in singles rankings, remaining there until October 2022.
