The competition is divided into two tiers: Davis Cup World Group 1 and the Davis Cup Finals. World Group 1 will take place from September 13-15 and includes 24 teams. The included teams are 12 that lost in the qualifying round for the finals and 12 teams that emerged victorious from the World Group I play-offs earlier in the year.

"When I was a kid, I asked my parents what do they want from me in the sport of tennis and it was to get a college scholarship and to play Davis Cup," began McEnroe. "In my days growing up, there was no tennis at the Olympics. There was not nearly as many team events. It wasn't until 1988 the Olympics tennis came back. I like to be part of a team. I played other sports, I thought that was awesome. To put that USA on your back as well. It's one of the greatest feelings that I ever had as a tennis player.
